Aging With Grace: What the Nun Study Teaches Us About Leading Longer, Healthier More Meaningful Lives
By David A. Snowdon

A 15 year study of 678 Roman Catholic nuns in five states reveals a connection between emotions and longevity and the symptoms of Alzheimer's disease..  David A. Snowdon. an epidemiologist at the University of Kentucky, spells out tantalizing clues and provocative theories about aging that affect all of us and how we perceive our ministry.  At least half a dozen factors have been identified that predict or contribute to Alzheimer's and aging.

The study suggests that positive emotions -- even at an early age -- can ward off disease and even prolong life as much as 10 years over those who seem to emote negatively more often than not.

Living in community such as a convent, or participating in a Christian church, where people express care and concern for one another contribute immeasurably to longevity and postponing the onset of dementia associated with Alzheimer's.

This recently released book is getting a lot of attention and will be read by many.  This book has much to teach us about how faith, wisdom, and spirituality can influence the length and quality of our lives. It behooves us to immerse ourselves in its ideas and ask what relevance they may have to the way we do church in our local parishes.
